I once won a wine tasting at a Chamber of Commerce mixer. Excited, I took my friends to this Santa Rosa winery, which will remain un-named, and tasted a Merlot that was nearly spoiled!! I looked around the winery for a different year, but it was not to be found. I asked my wine-wise friends about this experience. They said that this winery messed up that batch. They were too cheap to dispose of this awful wine, so they tried to dump it on the tourists.
I then went to Willi's Wine Bar in Santa Rosa and asked the waitress to suggest a fruity pinot noir. She brought me a glass of Melville Pinot Noir. It smelled complex. When I took a sip, tears came to my eyes. It was that good. Nowadays, I prefer to sit at the bar, so I can ask questions about wine. The servers there have an encyclopedic knowledge.
The other wine bars that I have visited had good wine. But I must say, Willi's has the best food. I especially like the patio they have in the back of the property. No one is ever out there, so it is intimate.
Update: November 2017-It makes me sad to read this post. Willi's burned up on Mon. Oct. 9, in the Tubb fire.
